Explore the history

Set in Japan’s Bakumatsu Period, 300 years into the tyrannical rule of the Tokugawa shogunate, you’ll take on the role of a nameless ronin carving their path through the war and political upheaval that defined the period.

1853: Arrival of the Black Ships

A US Navy expedition, comprised mainly of steam-powered ships, arrive in Japan. Commodore Perry demanded that Japan’s shogunate agree to a treaty that would open the country up to the world.

1860: The Sakuradamon Incident

Nationalists who advocated for the expulsion of foreigners from Japan attack Naosuke li’s entourage outside the Sakuradamon gate of Edo Castle. Chief Minister li is killed during the incident.

1864: The Kinmon Incident

The Choshu army, led by Kusaka Genzui, rebel against the shogunate near the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. An urban battle unfolds, with cannons used by both sides. Kyoto is left engulfed in flame as a result.

1867: Taisei Hokan

The 15th Tokugawa shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa, announced that he would restore sovereignty to the Emperor. This would lead to the demise of a shogunate that had ruled Japan for over 200 years

1868: Battle of Toba-Fushimi

The forces of the new imperial government clash with Tokugawa Shogunate troops near Toba- Fushimi in Kyoto. Clashes between both sides would play out all over Japan for a year and a half following this battle.
